Scared about making bread or bread rolls…don’t be. Use this recipe to make your bread rolls at home. You can either have them plain or stuff them with any filling you like. You’ll never want to buy any bread rolls after you have made your own.
All Purpose Flour – 2 cups
Yeast – 1 ½ tsp
Sugar – 2 tsps
Salt – ½ tsp
Milk (warm) – ½ cup
Water (warm) – 1/8 cup
Butter – 2 tbsps
Egg (beaten) – 1 no.
Mix the yeast with warm water and sugar and leave it to froth. This will take approx. 10 mins.
Sift the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl and keep ready.
Add the butter to the milk and microwave till the butter has melted, approx a minute.
Now, everything is ready to make the dough. Mix the yeast mix, beaten egg and add the butter /milk mix into the flour, slowly. You will need almost all of the milk butter mix. Knead well to make the dough. The dough will be slightly sticky, add more flour if the dough is too sticky. the dough will be soft and will not stick to the hands but make sure to see that the dough is not stiff like chappati dough. Knead well on the counter top for 10-15 minutes. Cover the dough and keep in a warm place for the dough to double in size. This would take an hour approx. Pre-heat the oven to 200 deg centigrade. When the dough has doubled, push all the air down, make small balls and fill with the stuffing. Whisk an egg and using a brush, brush each ball with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, till the buns have a golden crust on top.
Serve the buns warm and ENJOY!!!
I have made a plaited stuffed bun. To make this, roll the dough into a rectangle. The dough should be 1-2mm in thickness. Place the stuffing in the centre, leaving about 2 inches at the sides. Cut strips on either side of the rectangle, on top and the bottom. Now, using the cut strips, start plaiting your bun, pinning the end at the centre. The dough will stick or use a bit of water with your finger to stick them. Egg wash and bake them the same way as above.
